AH…LAVENDER!

Get your olfactory bulbs in gear! Meaning…get your smelling senses ready! It’s July, and that means the Lavender Festivals will be in full bloom! Here in the Pacific Northwest, the scented, purple buds known for their culinary use, aromatherapy, and bath-and-body products will be making themselves even more popular this month. Of note, is that the Olympic Peninsula area of Washington State is touted as the “lavender capital of the world.” It is the site of a huge and very popular lavender festival mid July held in the city of Sequim, whereby thousands of visitors arrive from all over to indulge and immerse themselves in everything lavender.

But, if you can’t wait until the weekend of July 15 or have other plans, there are smaller lavender festivals ongoing around the region. If you live in the Tacoma area of Puget Sound, check out the Mountain Meadow Lavender Festival ongoing July 9-10. Located in the rural Roy community, it is a small lavender farm that is easy to get to. Just exit I-5 at Hwy 512 and head east. Take the Hwy 7 exit and head south through Parkland and Spanaway. Turn right on Hwy 507 and then left on 8th Ave. S. Continue for 6 miles and turn right on 304 th St. The farm is located on the corner lot. The lavender festival is free, along with free parking. There is food, crafts vendors, music, vintage autos, and U-pick lavender. I sampled a little bit of everything. I tried the lavender-lemonade and lavender infused cookies…yum! As well, you can indulge in pear-lavender or lavender-lemon sorbet. If that doesn’t titillate your taste buds,  how about some white-chocolate ice cream! I think my eyes were bigger than my stomach reading some of the culinary choices.

Okay, besides the food, there are arts and crafts vendors, as well as the farm’s own lavender products for the home and bath. How about lavender soaps, lavender face and body creams, lavender bath salts, lavender baking mixes, lavender chocolate, and one of my favorites— blueberry-lavender jam! Also, one of the vendors that sells alpaca wool clothing accessories brought along a couple of their own cute, adorable alpacas, one of which you can view in the photos below. Also, check out the lavender distillation demonstration and lavender vinegar-making class, as well as a lavender growing expert on hand to answer your questions.

So, go ahead, check out and support your local lavender festival! Invite your taste buds to something new!
